This week, my focus shifted towards exploring the interplay of light and shadow in my project. To inject variety into my collection, I decided to take a projection-based approach for my experimentation. It's essential to mention that these experiments aim to move away from screen-based outcomes, hence the exploration of projections through shadows, reflections, and refractions.
I began by delving into the physics of shadows. Understanding factors such as the distance between objects and the light source, as well as the size of the light source, was crucial for creating specific shadows. With this knowledge in mind, I worked on the initial step of practically applying the theory of reflections and shadows.
I constructed a scaled-down structure resembling a hollow cube, integrating wires within its framework. This setup allowed me to analyse the formation of shadows, providing insights into their functionality. By experimenting with different light angles and distances, I was able to understand how shadows interact with objects and surfaces.
During our class presentation with Kyuh, I had the opportunity to receive feedback on my project. Being the last one to present, I could sense that everyone was pretty drained by that point, which was understandable. However, I encountered some miscommunication during my consultation with Kyuh. It seemed that he couldn't quite grasp what I meant by "tangible interactions," and despite my attempts to explain it, I couldn't clarify it properly. It became a bit confusing for both of us as his understanding of tangibility differed from mine.
This discrepancy made me pause and rethink my approach because I had thought that the concept of tangible interactions was straightforward, especially given the nature of my project. However, it seems that there was a disconnect in our understanding. Despite this, Kyuh did offer a valuable suggestion regarding materiality for the light and shadow artefact, which sparked some ideas for further experimentation.
As we are coming to the end of January a lot of my focus was shifting to finishing dissertation so the upcoming weeks were a bit slower with less practical work and more of ideation and conceptual work since I had to figure that out as well for my dissertation.
